When people contact us asking about etching, they often mean slightly different things. Some want the look of text that has been eaten into a metal surface — that deep, permanent mark you see on a quality building plaque or a piece of industrial equipment. Others want decorative metalwork with fine detail that would be impossible to achieve by hand. And some are simply not sure whether they need etching or engraving, and want someone to explain the difference honestly.
We do all of this work in our Musaffah workshop. This article explains what metal etching is, how it compares to engraving, what materials we work with, and what to expect when you place an order with our team.
What Metal Etching Is in Simple Words
Metal etching is a process that uses a chemical reaction to remove material from the surface of a metal sheet, creating recessed text, logos, or patterns. The areas you want to protect are masked off, and the exposed metal is treated with an etching solution that bites into the surface. The result is a permanent, recessed design that will not fade, peel, or wear away under normal conditions.
The depth of the etch can be controlled, and once the process is complete, the recessed areas can be left as bare metal or filled with paint or enamel to create contrast — black text on brushed stainless steel, for example, or gold fill on brass.
Etching is particularly well suited to fine detail, small text, and designs that need to be reproduced consistently across large batches. It is widely used for room name plates, equipment labels, building plaques, and decorative metalwork.
Etching vs Engraving — A Simple Comparison
Both processes produce permanent marks on metal, but they work differently and suit different applications. Here is a straightforward comparison:
| Chemical Etching | Engraving (Laser or CNC) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Chemical reaction removes surface material | Laser beam or cutting tool removes material mechanically |
| Depth | Shallow, consistent across the whole piece | Variable — can be shallow or deep depending on the method |
| Fine detail | Excellent — very fine lines and small text reproduce well | Good for laser; CNC is better for bolder, deeper cuts |
| Large batch consistency | Very high — all pieces in a batch are identical | High for laser; CNC requires more setup time per batch |
| Best uses | Room plates, equipment labels, decorative panels, plaques | Door signs, awards, Arabic calligraphy, industrial tags |
| Colour fill | Paint or enamel fill applied after etching | Paint fill possible but less common |
In practice, many of our clients do not need to choose — they describe what they need, and we recommend the right process for the job. If you are unsure, contact us and we will advise.

Materials We Work With
Stainless steel is the most common material for etched signage in the UAE. It is durable, looks professional, and handles the outdoor climate well. We work with brushed and mirror-polished finishes. Grade 304 is suitable for most indoor and sheltered outdoor applications. Grade 316 offers better resistance to salt air and humidity, making it the right choice for coastal locations or exposed outdoor installations.
Brass has a warmth and weight that stainless steel does not. It is a popular choice for commemorative plaques, building entrance signs, and corporate gifts. Etched brass with a dark or coloured fill has a classic appearance that works well in formal settings — hotel lobbies, government buildings, and heritage properties.
Aluminium is lighter than both steel and brass, and takes etching cleanly. We use it for equipment labels, asset tags, and signs where weight is a consideration or where the piece needs to be fixed to machinery or pipework.
Colour Paint Fill and Finishes
One of the advantages of etching is that the recessed areas can be filled with paint or enamel after the process is complete. This creates a clear contrast between the text or design and the background metal, making the sign easier to read and giving it a more finished appearance.
We offer a range of fill colours — black, white, gold, silver, and custom colours to match your brand. The fill is applied by hand and cured to produce a durable, long-lasting result. For outdoor applications, we use paints that are resistant to UV and moisture.
The background metal can be left in its natural brushed or polished state, or treated with a protective coating to slow oxidation and maintain the appearance over time.
Batch Production of Room Plates and Equipment Labels
This is one of the areas where etching really shows its value. When a building needs 50, 100, or 200 identical room name plates — all bilingual, all the same size, all with consistent text depth and paint fill — etching is the most reliable way to produce them.
We handle this kind of work regularly for hotels, hospitals, office buildings, and industrial facilities across Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The process starts with your room list and any artwork or logo that needs to appear on the plates. We prepare the artwork, confirm the layout with you, and then produce the full batch in our Musaffah workshop.
Each plate is checked before it leaves our workshop. Fixing holes, standoffs, and adhesive backing can all be added depending on how the plates will be installed.
Equipment labels follow a similar process. We produce etched metal labels for machinery, pipework, electrical panels, and site equipment — typically in aluminium or stainless steel, with text in English, Arabic, or both.
Laser Cutting and Decorative Metal Panels
Alongside etching, we also produce laser-cut decorative metalwork — screens, panels, wall art, and ornamental pieces in stainless steel and other metals. Laser cutting removes material completely rather than just recessing it, creating open patterns and shapes with a level of detail that would be impossible to achieve by hand.
This kind of work is used for interior decoration, architectural features, gifts, and corporate pieces. Arabic calligraphy and geometric patterns are popular choices. The pieces can be left as flat panels, formed into three-dimensional shapes, or mounted on a backing material for display.
The combination of etching and laser cutting in the same workshop means we can handle complex projects that require both processes — a plaque with etched text and a laser-cut decorative border, for example, or a gift piece that combines both techniques.
Our Step-by-Step Process
Here is how a typical etching or laser-cutting order works with our team:
1. Send us your brief. Tell us what you need — the material, the quantity, the text or design, and how the pieces will be used. If you have artwork files, send those too. We work with PDF, AI, EPS, DXF, and high-resolution images.
2. We prepare the artwork. Our team converts your files into the format required for the process, checking text, sizing, and layout. For bilingual pieces, we review the Arabic text carefully before production.
3. We confirm the details with you. Before we start, we confirm the material, finish, colour fill, quantity, and any fixing requirements. For larger orders, we may produce a sample first.
4. Production in our Musaffah workshop. All work is done in-house. We do not outsource etching or laser cutting.
5. Quality check and delivery. Each piece is inspected before it leaves our workshop. We deliver across Abu Dhabi and the UAE, or you can collect from our workshop in Musaffah 39.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between etching and engraving? Etching uses a chemical process to recess the design into the metal surface. Engraving uses a laser beam or a mechanical cutting tool to remove material. Both produce permanent marks, but they suit different applications — etching is particularly good for fine detail and large batches, while engraving offers more flexibility in depth and is well suited to decorative work. See our engraving post for a detailed look at engraving specifically.
Can you produce bilingual English and Arabic etching? Yes. Bilingual work is one of our most common requests. We handle Arabic text with care, reviewing the script and layout before production to make sure the result is correct.
What stainless steel grades do you work with? We work with both grade 304 and grade 316 stainless steel. Grade 304 is suitable for most indoor and sheltered outdoor applications. Grade 316 is recommended for coastal or exposed outdoor locations where salt air and humidity are a concern.
Can the etched areas be filled with colour? Yes. We offer paint and enamel fill in a range of colours — black, white, gold, silver, and custom colours. The fill is applied after etching and cured for durability. For outdoor applications, we use UV and moisture-resistant paints.
