Flex Banner Printing in the UAE: Materials, Sizes, and Best Practices

Flex banners remain one of the most widely used and cost-effective outdoor advertising formats in the UAE. From construction site hoardings to event backdrops, retail promotions to road-side advertising, flex printing delivers large-scale visual impact at a fraction of the cost of rigid signage.

Understanding the different materials, printing technologies, and design requirements helps you get the best results from your flex banner investment.

What Is Flex Banner Printing?

Flex banner printing refers to large-format digital printing on flexible PVC (polyvinyl chloride) substrates. The term "flex" comes from the flexible nature of the material, which allows it to be rolled for transport and storage, and to flex slightly in wind without tearing.

Modern flex banners are printed using solvent or eco-solvent inkjet printers that deposit UV-resistant inks directly onto the PVC surface. The result is a durable, weather-resistant graphic that can withstand UAE outdoor conditions for 1–3 years depending on the material specification.

Types of Flex Banner Materials

Standard PVC Flex (Frontlit)

The most common flex material. A white PVC substrate with a smooth or matte surface, designed to be viewed from the front with ambient or artificial lighting. Available in weights from 280gsm (lightweight, for short-term use) to 550gsm (heavy-duty, for long-term outdoor applications).

Best for: Construction hoardings, retail promotions, event backdrops, temporary outdoor advertising.

Backlit Flex

A translucent PVC substrate designed to be illuminated from behind. Backlit flex produces vivid, saturated colours when used with lightboxes and illuminated frames. The material is typically thinner and more translucent than frontlit flex.

Best for: Illuminated lightboxes, backlit display frames, retail window displays, airport advertising.

Mesh Flex (Perforated)

Mesh flex has a perforated surface that allows air to pass through. This dramatically reduces wind loading on large banners, making it essential for banners installed on scaffolding, fencing, and building facades in exposed locations.

Best for: Building wraps, scaffolding banners, large outdoor installations in windy locations.

Scrim Flex

Scrim flex incorporates a woven fabric reinforcement within the PVC layers, providing exceptional tear resistance. It is the premium choice for large banners that will be repeatedly installed and removed.

Best for: Reusable event banners, trade show backdrops, banners subject to frequent handling.

Blockout Flex

A multi-layer PVC material with a black inner layer that prevents light transmission. Used for double-sided banners where you do not want the reverse image to show through.

Best for: Double-sided banners, banners installed where backlighting is unavoidable.

Standard Banner Sizes in the UAE

While we print to any custom size, common banner dimensions in the UAE include:

  • 1×2m — standard promotional banner
  • 1×3m — retail and event banner
  • 2×3m — medium outdoor banner
  • 3×6m — standard hoarding panel
  • 4×8m — large hoarding panel
  • 6×12m — billboard-scale banner
  • Custom sizes — we print to any dimension up to 5m wide in a single piece; wider banners are produced in sections and joined on-site

Design Guidelines for Flex Banners

Resolution Large-format banners are viewed from a distance, so the effective resolution required is lower than for print materials viewed up close. As a general rule:

  • Banners viewed from 3–5m: 100–150 dpi at final size
  • Banners viewed from 5–10m: 72–100 dpi at final size
  • Banners viewed from 10m+: 50–72 dpi at final size

Colour mode Design in CMYK colour mode. RGB designs will be converted during the printing process, which can cause colour shifts — particularly with vibrant reds and oranges.

Bleed Include a minimum 50mm bleed on all sides. This allows for hemming and finishing without cutting into the design.

Text legibility Minimum font size for text that needs to be read from a distance: 50mm tall for every 10m of viewing distance. Keep text concise — a banner has 3–5 seconds to communicate its message.

Finishing options

  • Hemmed edges — reinforced edges with eyelets for rope or bungee cord attachment
  • Pole pockets — sewn sleeves for banner poles
  • Welded seams — for joining multiple panels on large installations
  • Grommets — metal eyelets at regular intervals for secure fixing

Caring for Your Flex Banners

To maximise the lifespan of your flex banners in UAE conditions:

  • Store rolled (not folded) in a cool, dry location when not in use
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water — avoid abrasive cleaners
  • Inspect fixings regularly, particularly after sandstorms
  • Replace banners showing significant fading, tearing, or delamination
