UV Printing in Abu Dhabi: Applications, Advantages, and What It Can Do for Your Business
UV printing technology enables direct printing on virtually any flat surface — acrylic, glass, metal, wood, and more. Discover the applications and advantages for Abu Dhabi businesses.
UV printing is one of the most significant technological advances in the printing and signage industry in recent years. By using ultraviolet light to instantly cure inks as they are deposited, UV printing enables direct printing on virtually any flat surface — including materials that were previously impossible to print on without specialist coatings or pre-treatment.
At Point to Point Advertising Designs LLC, our UV printing capabilities include both flatbed printing (for rigid substrates) and roll-to-roll UV printing (for flexible media), giving us the ability to produce a vast range of printed products in-house.
How UV Printing Works
In conventional inkjet printing, inks dry through evaporation or absorption into the substrate. This limits the range of materials that can be printed on — the ink needs somewhere to go.
UV printing uses inks that contain photoinitiators — chemical compounds that react to UV light. As the print head deposits ink onto the substrate, UV lamps mounted on the print head immediately expose the ink to UV light, triggering a chemical reaction (polymerisation) that instantly cures the ink into a hard, durable layer on the surface.
Because the ink cures on the surface rather than being absorbed, UV printing can print on virtually any flat, non-porous material.
UV Flatbed Printing
A UV flatbed printer holds the substrate on a flat bed and moves the print head across it. The substrate does not need to move — making it possible to print on rigid, heavy, or fragile materials that cannot be fed through a roll-to-roll printer.
Materials we print on with our flatbed UV printer:
- Acrylic sheet (clear, white, coloured, frosted)
- Aluminium composite (Dibond, Alucobond)
- Aluminium sheet
- Stainless steel sheet
- Glass and mirror
- MDF and plywood
- PVC sheet and foam board
- Ceramic tiles
- Leather and fabric (with appropriate pre-treatment)
- Corrugated cardboard and packaging materials
Maximum print bed size: Up to 2500×1250mm (larger items can be printed in sections)
UV Roll-to-Roll Printing
Roll-to-roll UV printing uses flexible UV-curable inks on roll media — PVC flex, vinyl, canvas, and other flexible substrates. The UV curing process produces inks that are more durable and scratch-resistant than conventional solvent inks, with excellent colour vibrancy.
Applications:
- Outdoor banners and flex graphics
- Vehicle wrap vinyl
- Window graphics
- Floor graphics
- Canvas prints
- Backlit displays
Advantages of UV Printing
Instant Curing
UV inks cure instantly, eliminating drying time. This means printed items can be handled, cut, and assembled immediately after printing — significantly reducing production time compared to solvent printing.
Exceptional Durability
Cured UV inks form a hard, chemically resistant layer on the substrate surface. UV-printed graphics are highly resistant to:
- Scratching and abrasion
- Chemical exposure (cleaning agents, fuels, oils)
- UV radiation (the cured ink is itself UV-stable)
- Moisture
Vibrant Colours
UV inks produce exceptionally vibrant colours, particularly on non-porous surfaces where conventional inks would sit on the surface and appear dull. The instant curing process locks in colour vibrancy.
White Ink Capability
UV printers can print white ink, enabling printing on transparent, translucent, and dark substrates. White ink can be used as a base layer (to create opacity on clear acrylic), as a top layer (for a frosted effect), or as part of the design.
Texture and Varnish Effects
Some UV printers can build up multiple layers of clear varnish to create tactile texture effects — raised lettering, embossed patterns, and spot gloss finishes that add a premium dimension to printed products.
Environmentally Friendly
UV inks contain no solvents and produce no VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions during printing. The instant curing process also eliminates the energy-intensive drying ovens required for some other printing processes.
